The Old Gaol Welcome to a Place of History
The Old Gaol

A vibrant community exists within the town of Abingdon, illustrated by the diverse range of family-friendly festivals. From specialist food markets, to sports, live theatre, music, river activities, antiques auctions, and classic car rallies, there's plenty going on for all ages. Annual events include:

  • An annual celebration of the mock election of a new Mayor of Ock Street by local inhabitants, followed by celebrations led by the local Morris Dancing troupe.
  • The longest and narrowest street fair in Europe, which comes to town once a year during the second week of October.
  • A long-standing tradition on special occasions entails the throwing of buns from the roof of Abingdon County Hall Museum.
  • 'Swan Upping' along the River Thames is a ceremony and celebration to mark the annual rounding up of these majestic birds.

Other events include an Annual Arts Festival, a French Market, a Craft Fair, Abingdon Airshow and the Dragon Boat Day.
